How distance from the exchange affects speed

Distance from your nearest exchange or street cabinet reduces broadband speed on copper lines, because the signal weakens the further it travels along old copper wiring. This affects ADSL and FTTC connections, but not full fibre.

In the UK, the maximum range for ADSL broadband is roughly 5.5 kilometres (3.4 miles) from the exchange. Speeds can start to deteriorate at much shorter distances though, especially if the copper lines are old or in poor condition. A neighbour two streets closer to the cabinet can receive a noticeably faster connection on the same package.
