What is an ideal broadband speed for me?

The ideal speed of broadband for you would vary on the activities you want to do online. A stand-ard connection should be good for daily online web browsing, however if you are one of the multi users or part of a bigger family who used broadband for online streaming or play online gaming or download larger files then you would require a faster broadband service.

Speed and streaming online

3 Mbps

Should be good enough for video streaming. Online video streaming site “Netflix” rec-ommends its users to have a minimum speed of 3 Mbps to avoid buffering and video lags.

5 Mbps

Ideal speed for HD streaming and for standard content. BBC iPlayer requires minimum speed of 5 Mbps for smooth streaming.

25 Mbps

If you are streaming 4k Ultra high-definition videos, you are required minimum speed of 25 Mbps.

Gaming and Broadband speed

For you to play online game you are only required broadband speed of 3 Mbps. However, to download digital games to your PC or a console (where a file size can be 20 GB to 200 GB), you'll need much faster broadband than 3Mbps. You would need superfast broadband that is designed for tasks like downloading larger files for this, you will at least require 30 Mbps to download such a file.

TalkTalk line installation

If you previously had BT services or currently have a BT phone line connected to your property, you should be able to setup your broadband service by following the simple instructions provided with-in your welcome pack from TalkTalk customer services. However, if there is no BT line at your property then you are required to get a new line installed by an engineer from the Openreach network.

If you do require an engineer to install a new line or carry out upgrades and repairs to your line then you may be required to pay £60 for telephone engineer to visit your home.
