British Gas Takes Over Rebel Energy Supply Accounts

British Gas Takes Over Rebel Energy Supply Accounts

On 1 April 2025, Rebel Energy Supply Ltd announced it has stopped trading. Because of this, Ofgem selected British Gas as the new supplier under the Supplier of Last Resort process. This means all Rebel Energy customers will continue to receive their energy supplies without any interruption or hassle. This includes around 84,000 domestic customers and 6,000 non-domestic customers.

The change to British Gas was completed on Sunday, April 6, 2025. Customers should keep an eye out for more updates in the coming days.

Why Did Rebel Energy Cease Trading?

Rebel Energy Supply Ltd struggled like many small suppliers. Ofgem described the situation as a “perfect storm.” This was due to rising wholesale prices, a lack of required capital, and increased operational costs. Since they could not operate sustainably, the company stopped trading on April 1, 2025.

What Is the Supplier of Last Resort Process?

The Supplier of Last Resort (SoLR) process is a safety measure managed by Ofgem. It helps protect people from losing their energy supplier if a company goes bust. Ofgem organises a competition to select a chosen supplier. This supplier will offer the best deal for the affected customers.

For Rebel Energy customers, this means:

  • The energy supply will not change.
  • Your credit balances are secure.
  • You will automatically change to a new supplier, British Gas.
  • There are no exit fees if you choose to switch again later.

What British Gas Said

Chris O’Shea, the CEO of Centrica, which owns British Gas, has confirmed:

British Gas is good at managing changes like this. Since 2021, they have welcomed more than 700,000 customers from other suppliers that failed. They achieved this through the Ofgem Supplier of Last Resort process.

Ofgem’s Message to Customers

Tim Jarvis, the Director General of Markets at Ofgem, stated:

Customers should wait until their new accounts are fully set up. They should not change energy suppliers before this.

What Customers Should Do Now

If you are a Rebel Energy customer, you can relax for now. British Gas will contact you soon. However, there are a few things you can prepare for:

Step Action
1 Wait for British Gas to contact you
2 Take a meter reading and keep it safe
3 Provide the reading when prompted
4 Set up your British Gas account
5 Review your new competitive tariff
6 Decide whether to stay or switch (no exit fees)

Tip: Do not switch right away. Ofgem and British Gas suggest waiting until your new account is fully active.

Will My Credit Balance Be Protected?

Yes, all credit balances for domestic customers will be moved to British Gas and fully respected.

Customer Type What Happens to Credit
Domestic (in credit) Balance protected and transferred to British Gas
Domestic (in debit) You will be contacted by Rebel Energy’s administrators
Former customers Credit will be honoured where applicable

This is a normal part of Ofgem’s last resort process. It is designed for people who are current domestic customers and those who were domestic customers in the past.

Will There Be Changes to My Energy Tariff?

British Gas will offer you a fair tariff that aligns with the current energy price cap. This ensures you do not pay too much while they handle your transfer.

  • You are free to move.
