EDF Energy choses Mace for works at Hinkley Point C

EDF Energy has chosen Mace as the favoured bidder for a proposed contract for the Hinkley Point C nuclear plant situated on the northern Somerset coast.

The plans involve major construction work, management services, and NEC contract management. Hinkley Point C nuclear plant is set to produce energy that will service a phenomenal 5 million homes when it becomes fully operational. This equates to an overall 7% of UK total energy requirement, placing it in high national interest.

It is understood, this ambitious project is likely to create 900 jobs for a future 60 years, with 25000 jobs taken up over the foreseeable 10 years it will take to build.

The good news is that EDF have an ethical policy in place to support the local community; during the construction, Mace will draw 80% of the labour required from the local area. It is, indeed, a defining project for both companies and the energy sector as a whole.

This type of local engagement can only be positive, providing opportunity for apprenticeships for local youth plus recruitment from local university graduates.

Furthermore, it is expected that Mace will also source the project and management team from the community; experienced staff from Mace will be drawn in to supplement the workforce.

EDF Energy want to go ahead with two new reactors with a capacity of 3.2 GW at Hinkley Point C and it is hoped this will yield the first of the new wave of nuclear plants in the UK.

The project is not insignificant. Mace, as the preferred bidder, will need to build a total of four park and ride facilities, three freight facilities and an induction building. In addition they will be required to improve the local road infrastructure plus construct three campus sites for accommodation for what will be in excess of 1500 employees.

Whilst contracts are still being negotiated, a final deal is expected to emerge from the talks, reiterating the relevant points concerning major stakeholders and interested parties. The value of this has not yet been revealed.

Mace has been in previous talks regarding EDF Energy’s proposed Hinkley Point C power station; proposals have already been submitted for on-off-site works, project controls, project management, procurement services and commercial management.
