Possible dangers with mobile phones

Mobile Phones

mobile_phoneBelow we look at some of the suggested dangers of mobile phones and their counter arguments. However from the outset, it’s important to note that empirically speaking, there isn’t enough evidence to suggest that mobile phones actually increase the risk of health problems.

Possible danger:

Mobile phones create a magnetic field which can affect how the cells in your body work.

Response:

The magnetic fields are small, so unlikely to affect the body cells.

Possible danger:

Mobile phones give off radio waves, which heat up body tissue leading to damaging effects.

Response:

The radio waves emitted from a phone are not powerful enough to heat the body up to a damaging level.

Possible danger:

Radio frequency waves which mimicked those of a mobile phone changed the gene expression in nematode worms.

Response:

Study was done on worms only, human brain cells may not behave in a similar fashion to those on a nematode worm.

Possible danger:

Mobile phones users are 2.5 times more likely to get cancer in the brain in areas which are adjacent to their phone ears.

Response:

Research scientists are not confident that the increase is linked to the use of mobile phones.

Possible danger:

People who use the mobile phone for prolonged periods of time sometimes complain of headaches, loss of concentration and fatigue.

Response:

Under laboratory conditions, this has not occurred so perhaps this is due to other lifestyle factors.

Possible danger:

Both mobile phones and power lines emit radiation. Research by the International Agency on Cancer found a correlation between childhood cancer and power lines.

Response:

There is a difference in radiation between power lines and mobile phones and, power lines emit a lot more radiation than a mobile phone.
