TheAnthropology Museum is situated by the water front and houses artefacts of Native American descent in addition to artwork from the great Bill Reid. For art lovers, The Flats is a burgeoning new art centre with numerous galleries detailing ground breaking contemporary work. The area was once an industrial quarter and is still laden with train tracks, so it is a great place to see the contrast between the old and the new and well worth a visit. The Vancouver Art Gallery is where you will find lots of photographic art and has come on dramatically since its revival in the late 90’s. There is also Dr Sun Yat-Sen’s Chinese Garden located in the Chinatown district, which depicts the craft of Chinese horticulture and is an oasis of calm in the city. Head down on a sunny day or a Friday night where there are special shows and entertainment. If sea life interests you, the Vancouver Aquarium is situated in Stanley Park and is a grand complex with species from across the globe. In addition to Beluga Whales, there are sea turtles and even a glowing jellyfish display.
Breathtaking natural beauty
Vancouver has many beautiful natural features and a good place to start is the Van Dusen Botanical Garden. With 22 hectares of open space filled with delightful foliage and a dazzling maze, you can stroll round on a hot summer’s day in some of the most splendid surroundings in Vancouver. Stanley Park is also a popular feature, and is a 1,000 acre greenland with a seafront view. If you enjoy skiing, then go to Grouse Mountain in winter. There is a cable car as well as a host of activities including skiing, ice-skating, and wildlife shows. For a longer walk, why not take on the 10km seawall trek, a journey of striking scenery and blissful serenity.
Vancouver is a great place to go out in the evening and has something for everyone. An absolute must is catching an opera or ballet show at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, an extravaganza that is guaranteed to blow you away. If you fancy something a little more risqué, then the Vancouver Burlesque festival hits the city in spring. For a night out, Davie Street Villageis a great place to start with many great pubs and cocktail bars. If you fancy something that opens a little later, then pop over to Denman Street for the fantastic night clubs.
