Energy UK, the trade association of UK gas and electricity suppliers, aimed at suggesting reforms in the energy industry, declares switching principles for customers on smart prepayment meters. The whole idea is to facilitate the customers with a smooth energy swap before, during and after the switch to gas and electricity supplier. As Energy UK has 100 suppliers, those who agree on the principles can help streamline the switch made by customers on smart meters.
As per the declaration, gas and electricity suppliers that agree and sign these principles will enforce them while rolling out the smart prepayment meters. This would be done instantly by some UK energy suppliers or within the immediate one and half year by others. This is done with an aim to support customers on smart prepayment meters to make a smooth switch to energy suppliers offering cheaper energy deals.
Some of the gas and electricity providers that have already signed the principles are the Big Six energy suppliers, Bristol Energy, Boost, Extra Energy, Green Start Energy, Toto Energy, Utility Warehouse and Utilita. The principles are launched when Ofgem announced £150 price cap on installation charges for customers that are compelled to switch to prepayment meters.
Lawrence Slade, Chief Executive of Energy UK gave a statement that “The launch of the smart prepayment switching principles demonstrates the industry’s ongoing commitment to ensuring the switching process works well for customers and providing support for those who need it. Smart meters bring great benefits to consumers and as the rollout continues, more and more prepayment customers will be able to switch with confidence as a result of these principles.”
Energy experts suggest that these principles would help customers to switch gas and electricity providers offering smart prepayment meters. As these customers normally include those that face crisis to pay energy bills, the principles would clear the doubts surrounding the energy swap. They can save themselves from unnecessary fears like exit fees or getting doubly charged when they switch energy supplier. By choosing prepayment meter, they leverage cheap energy deals and minimize their utility bills.
