Electricity is an essential part of our day to day life. Being an important resource, it is equally important to conserve it. By avoiding wastage of electricity we can make savings and cut down our monthly budget.

It also helps to switch to better plans or suppliers if we have a fair idea about the monthly usage of electricity. For this, we need to know how to read electric meters accurately. Let us check the most effective methods used for reading electricity bills.

How to read electricity bill?

Depending upon the type of electricity meter, one can take the reading. Here are a few types of electricity meters and their reading methods.

Standard meters: The mechanical device needs to be read from left to right. Just read the five numbers from left to right and ignore any red numbers, if present.

Dial meters: These resemble traditional clocks and are complex to read when compared to standard meters. Here, you have to keep in mind that dials next to each other go round in opposite directions. Read the dial numbers from left to right. If any red dial is present then ignore its readings. Ignore any dials without figure or hands. If the needle is placed between any two figures then consider the figure on the left of the needle. This will give you a rough estimate as there are chances of slight variations.

Digital meters: These are simplest to read. All you have to do is read the first five figures on the digital display. Ignore last figures that start with 0.1. Here, you may need to press a button to get the figures displayed.
